Architectural Design Laboratory

In April 2018, this laboratory (commonly known as Hokkaido University's 5th Department of Architecture) changed its name from "Architectural History and Design Laboratory" to "Architectural Design Laboratory." Since its establishment in 1948, this laboratory has been based on the attitude of viewing things in chronological order, and has been conducting research, evaluation, and consideration of issues related to architecture and related phenomena in various countries and regions, including Hokkaido. We have conducted a variety of research and investigation activities. What is unique about this school is that the baton has been passed down through successive generations of teachers and students, with both planning and history as research fields.

In recent years, while inheriting the basic attitude of the past, we have focused on architectural design, and have established the social positioning of modern planning and design activities, the professional skills required of planners and architects, and the concept of regions and architectural design. Our activities center around research to discover logic. Furthermore, we are actively engaged in design projects that put the knowledge derived from our research into practice.

Rather than being bound by the framework of a country, we position Hokkaido within a wide range of countries including overseas countries, and actively study various phenomena and cases in various regions inside and outside of Hokkaido as well as overseas, in order to explore the possibilities of its architecture and regional development. considered as the subject of research studies and projects. We actively dispatch students to overseas universities, accept international students, and interact with researchers and architects from other countries. On the other hand, as a research institution that supports the philosophy of regional and architectural development in the unique environment of Hokkaido, our laboratory has been archiving historical materials related to Hokkaido and surrounding areas and various knowledge based on them. Our goal is to create a system that allows us to widely provide our research.

In order for future architecture and community development to become even more enriching, we will foster human resources with deep insight based on a wealth of knowledge, and we will also strive to make our laboratory a place for thinking and putting things into action. , I would like to work hard every day.
