建築デザイン学研究室
2018年4月、本研究室（通称：北大建築第5講座）は、名称を“建築史意匠学研究室”から、 “建築デザイン学研究室”に改めました。1948年の創設以来、本研究室は、時系列でものごとを捉える態度を基本としながら、北海道をはじめとする様々な国や地域の建築、及びそれらに関わる事象の調査、評価、課題の考察など、多様な調査・研究活動を展開してきました。特徴的なのは、計画と歴史の両輪を研究分野としながら、歴代の先生方や学生によってバトンが受け継がれてきたことです。
近年では、これまでの基本態度を継承しつつ、建築デザインを中心に見据え、現代における計画と設計行為の社会的位置づけ、計画者や建築家に求められる職能、地域と建築デザインのコンセプトを構築する論理を見いだすための研究を主軸とした活動を行っています。さらに、研究から導き出された知見を実践するデザインプロジェクトにも積極的に取り組んでいます。
国という枠組みにとらわれず、北海道を、海外諸国を含めた広域の中に位置づけ、その建築や地域づくりの可能性を探るために、道内外諸地域や海外における様々な事象や事例を、積極的に研究調査やプロジェクトの対象と考えています。海外の大学への学生派遣、留学生の受け入れ、諸外国の研究者や建築家との交流なども積極的に行っています。一方、北海道という特徴的な環境における、地域・建築づくりの哲学を支える研究機関として、これまで本研究室が蓄積してきた道内や周辺地域に関する史料のアーカイブ化と、それに基づいた様々な知見を、研究室から広く提供できる仕組みづくりを行うことも目標としています。
今後の建築と地域づくりが、より豊かなものになっていくために、豊富な知見に基づいた深い洞察力をもった人材を育成すると共に、研究室が、考え実行する場になっていくよう、日々努力していきたいと考えています。

In April 2018, our laboratory (commonly known as 5ko) changed its name from the "Laboratory of Architectural History and Design" to the "Hokkaido University Laboratory of Architectural Design." Since its establishment in 1948, the laboratory has engaged in a wide range of research activities, focusing on the investigation, evaluation, and analysis of architectural and related phenomena in various countries and regions, including Hokkaido. While maintaining a fundamental attitude of understanding things in chronological order, we have continued to explore diverse topics. A defining characteristic of our laboratory is that the fields of planning and history have been studied side by side, with the baton of research passed down from professors to students over generations.
In recent years, while preserving this fundamental approach, we have placed a greater emphasis on architectural design, focusing on the social role of planning and design in contemporary society, the professional competencies required of planners and architects, and the logical framework for constructing concepts of regional and architectural design. Additionally, we actively engage in design projects that put the knowledge gained from our research into practice.
Beyond national borders, we position Hokkaido within a broader regional and international context, exploring the possibilities of architecture and regional development. As part of this effort, we actively conduct research and projects on various cases and phenomena both within and outside of Hokkaido, including overseas. We also facilitate student exchanges with foreign universities, host international students, and collaborate with researchers and architects from various countries.
At the same time, as a research institution supporting the philosophy of regional and architectural development in Hokkaido’s distinctive environment, we aim to create a system for archiving the historical materials we have accumulated on Hokkaido and surrounding regions and sharing the resulting knowledge widely.
To ensure that future architecture and regional development become richer and more meaningful, we strive daily to cultivate individuals with deep insight grounded in extensive knowledge. Our goal is for this laboratory to serve as a place for thinking and taking action.
